Course Description

  • Pre-Requisites: Concurrent enrollment in Foundations of Pre-Algebra, College

    Preparatory Math 1 or Algebra 1.

    This course is recommended for those students who may pursue post secondary education and who plan to pursue a career in a non-science field. The emphasis is on a broad overview of astronomy, geology, meteorology and oceanography and how those fields of study affect students' lives. There is less emphasis on mathematics and detailed concepts than in Earth Systems Science 1 or Advanced Earth Systems Science 1.  Evaluation is based on tests, quizzes, laboratory work, homework and special assignments.

  • Class Expectations

    • Be courteous and respectful to all.
    • Have a pencil every day.
    • Data devices may only be used for educational purposes.  If a device is used for any other reason, it will be confiscated.
    • Use restroom before or after class.
    • No food or drink except water consumed during class.

    Required Materials

    1. Three (3) ring binder (1 or 2 inches wide) with lined paper inside
      • notebooks will be checked periodically throughout the course
    2. Textbook – (Holt Earth Science)
      • Have your book covered (we will do this as a class)
      • Have your book in school everyday.
      • There will be an unlocked cabinet in the room to store your book. It is your choice to leave the book in the cabinet.  I am not responsible for your book if someone else takes it.
    3. Sharpened pencil with eraser
      • All assignments must be done in pencil!!
      • Pencils sho uld be sharpened before the start of class.
      • Mistakes should be erased, not scribbled out!
    4. Goggles
      • If you do not yet have a pair, they may be purchased at the Roar Store.
    5. Optional Materials: Colored Pencils, Calculator, Protractor
  • If You Are Absent

    • Check my webpage (Assignments - ESS) for weekly agenda & assignments.   
    • Any assignment not found online should be obtained from your teacher.
    • According to your handbook: “Teachers are not required to provide assignments, make-up examinations, etc., for unexcused absences.”


    Grades

    • Posted online via Student & Parent Portal
    • Late assignments receive a 10% deduction per day up to 50% off.
    • Assignments not turned in within 2 weeks will receive a 0%.
    • No individual extra credit.

    Tests, Quests, and Quizzes

    • Short quizzes and slightly longer ‘quests’ review information and apply basic concepts.
    • Tests cover a large quantity of information
    • Tests are designed to be a challenge, but achievable.  To most students a “C” on a test should be well within reach with a reasonable amount o f reviewing, studying and a good attitude toward the required work.
    • By accurately completing all assignments (don’t just fill in the blanks!!!!) diligent students can usually expect to earn a letter grade higher than their test average.
  • Extra Credit
    There will be no individual extra credit given in this course. It is your responsibility to complete the work assigned to earn a good grade rather than doing extra assignments to bring up your grade.

    If you have any problems, talk to me.  I strive to be firm but reasonable and open minded.  The sooner I am aware of your difficulties, the better the chances that we can work something out.  A solution can start with a short meeting after class.
